I'm Dylan Rowe

I have held an interest in and been passionate about all things wildlife and conservation related for most of my life. After developing a fascination for the worlds of infectious disease and genetics during my high school biology study, I chose to pursue a career in veterinary science. I have gained a deep-rooted passion for the health and welfare of all species and a keen interest in the relationships us humans have with both our companion and domestic animals, as well as wildlife.

I am currently completing my third year of a Bachelor of Science and Advanced Studies (Animal and Veterinary Bioscience) at the University of Sydney, with a major in Animal Health, Disease and Welfare. My near-term goals are to apply what I have learned in a real-world veterinary setting and gain experience within the industry, as well as complete an honours project in 2025.

My story

From 2019 to 2022 I worked on the Toongabbie Creek Small Bird Habitat Project as a volunteer member of the Daranggara Bushcare Group. During this time, I developed an interest in how the health of native fauna can be supported by improved scientific understanding of conservation.

After completing work experience at Pendle Hill Veterinary Hospital, I became passionate about applying my knowledge to improving the health and welfare of companion animals. Facilitating the special relationships humans have with their pets has been incredibly rewarding.

In 2021 I had the opportunity to apply my scientific communication skills to share my passion for animals with members of the public as a community outreach team member of the Parramatta River Catchment Group. I collaborated with environment experts to help organise a World Environment Day event which included family-focused wildlife and conservation education.

At university

As part of my university study, I have had experience handling a variety of domestic animal species. I have administered subcutaneous and intramuscular injections for sheep and cattle, performed artificial insemination and ultrasound pregnancy checks on ewes, restrained and vaccinated layer hens, and restrained pigs and sheep for health assessments. I have also had experience working in laboratory settings and am competent with the principles of diagnostics using bacteriology and genetics.

For my studies in 2023, I was awarded with the Dean’s List of Excellence in Academic Performance.

The interests I have developed over the course of my degree are broad but include areas such as:
